Q: Why is protein important for exercise?

A: Protein is critical for building muscle mass; however, just eating protein won’t get you toned. Muscle growth and repair requires the proper combination of exercise and diet. Even timing plays a role in maximizing protein’s health benefits. Researchers encourage eating a high-quality protein (such as eggs, dairy or soy) plus a complex carbohydrate within 15 minutes of exercising to build strong muscles. A hard-boiled egg and banana is the perfect recovery snack combo after a workout.

Having a strong chest improves posture and prevents shoulder injuries related to strenuous activity, such as yard work and sports. Doing a simple chest press with dumbbells on a stability ball is an excellent exercise. Not only will it give you greater range of motion, it will also work your chest, shoulders, triceps and core simultaneously. With a stronger chest, you’ll be able to push and lift objects with less effort and better your athletic performance. Watch a demo video here.

What’s your advice for other members starting out?

Continually set realistic and obtainable goals. Find a tried-and-tested program to follow and execute it with good form. Don’t be afraid to use the incredible resources available at Sola and ask for help. The most important thing to remember is to be consistent. The only way to achieve and surpass your goals is to stick with it.

The goal of Sola’s Exercise Fundamentals seminar is to teach members of all fitness levels how to create a well-rounded exercise program. An experienced Sola fitness coach will lead members through every element of a complete workout, including warm-up, cardio, strength training and cooldown. You’ll learn how to properly use our equipment and different exercise methods to maximize every minute of your workout for optimal results.
